StubSure

StubSure analyzes documents for internal inconsistencies. It is not a consumer reporting agency, and its reports are not consumer reports under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Reports describe documents, not people, and must not be the sole basis for a housing decision. Apply the same screening criteria to every applicant in line with the Fair Housing Act.

“Adjusted gross income doesn't add up”

What this flag on a tax return means, why it matters, and what to check.

What it means

Line 11 (adjusted gross income) isn't line 9 minus line 10.

Why it matters

It's a single subtraction that tax software always gets right.

Ordinary explanations

  • A hand-filled return with an arithmetic slip.

What to check

Ask the applicant for the IRS tax return transcript for that year (free at irs.gov with Get Transcript, or with Form 4506-T), which shows the return as the IRS received it.

A flag is a reason to verify with the source, not proof. Apply the same steps to every applicant.
