How to verify a Wells Fargo bank statement

Follow the balance
A Wells Fargo statement, like any bank statement, is a chain: the beginning balance plus deposits minus withdrawals equals the ending balance. Where a running balance is printed, each row's balance should equal the previous one plus that row's amount. An edited deposit usually breaks the chain on the next line.
Check the routing number
Routing numbers have a built-in checksum. If the statement shows one, it should pass, and the directory result should name Wells Fargo (large banks use several routing numbers, often by state).
Find the paycheck
If the applicant also sent a pay stub, its net pay should arrive as a deposit within a day or two of the pay date, usually with the employer's or a payroll company's name in the description.
Get the statement from Wells Fargo directly
Wells Fargo customers can download past statements as PDFs from online banking or the mobile app. Ask the applicant to download the same month while you watch, or to show you the account in the app. Ask every applicant the same way.
