CROSS-CHECK“The letter's pay doesn't match the pay stub”
What this flag on a set of documents means, why it matters, and what to check.
What it means
The yearly pay worked out from the letter is more than 20% away from the yearly pay worked out from the stub of the same employer.
Why it matters
When pay is inflated in one document, it rarely matches the other.
Ordinary explanations
- A recent raise or promotion.
- Overtime, tips or commission on the stub that the letter's base pay doesn't include.
What to check
Ask the employer to confirm the current pay rate. Use the phone number on the employer's official website, not the one printed on the stub.
A flag is a reason to verify with the source, not proof. Apply the same steps to every applicant.
