CROSS-CHECK“Year-to-date pay doesn't carry over between stubs”
What this flag on a set of documents means, why it matters, and what to check.
What it means
On consecutive stubs in the same year, the later year-to-date gross isn't the earlier year-to-date gross plus the later stub's gross pay.
Why it matters
Year-to-date totals grow by exactly each paycheck. When stubs are edited one at a time, the totals stop following each other.
Ordinary explanations
- A stub missing in between, such as an off-cycle bonus check.
- A mid-year payroll provider change that restarted the totals.
What to check
Ask the employer to confirm year-to-date earnings on each stub. Use the phone number on the employer's official website, not the one printed on the stub.
A flag is a reason to verify with the source, not proof. Apply the same steps to every applicant.
