Report flags / documents
CROSS-CHECK“Same employer, different EIN”
What this flag on a set of documents means, why it matters, and what to check.
What it means
The pay stub and the W-2 name the same employer but print different EINs.
Why it matters
An employer's EIN doesn't change from year to year, so one of the two numbers was typed in.
Ordinary explanations
- Large companies sometimes pay through a subsidiary with its own EIN.
What to check
Ask the employer to confirm its EIN. Ask the applicant for the IRS wage and income transcript (free at irs.gov or with Form 4506-T), which lists W-2 amounts as the employer reported them.
A flag is a reason to verify with the source, not proof. Apply the same steps to every applicant.
