StubSure analyzes documents for internal inconsistencies. It is not a consumer reporting agency, and its reports are not consumer reports under the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Reports describe documents, not people, and must not be the sole basis for a housing decision. Apply the same screening criteria to every applicant in line with the Fair Housing Act.

“No California SDI withheld”

What this flag on a pay stub means, why it matters, and what to check.

What it means

The employee works in California, the stub itemizes deductions, but there's no State Disability Insurance (SDI) line.

Why it matters

California employers withhold SDI from covered employees' wages. A California stub without it is unusual. On its own it's a note.

Ordinary explanations

  • Many public employers, such as cities and school districts, are covered by SDI only if they elect to join.
  • An employer with a state-approved Voluntary Plan instead of SDI, where the deduction carries the plan's name.

What to check

Ask the employer whether SDI is withheld, for example under a voluntary plan. Use the phone number on the employer's official website, not the one printed on the stub.

A flag is a reason to verify with the source, not proof. Apply the same steps to every applicant.
