Report flags / pay stub
NUMBERS“No Social Security or Medicare withheld”
What this flag on a pay stub means, why it matters, and what to check.
What it means
The stub shows wages but no Social Security or Medicare withholding.
Why it matters
Almost all W-2 employees pay both. A stub without them may not come from a real payroll run.
Ordinary explanations
- Some state and local government employees and certain religious or student workers are exempt.
- A 1099 contractor's payment summary has no withholding at all.
What to check
Ask the employer to confirm employment and the gross and net pay for this paycheck. Use the phone number on the employer's official website, not the one printed on the stub.
A flag is a reason to verify with the source, not proof. Apply the same steps to every applicant.
