Report flags / pay stub
NUMBERS“Year-to-date Social Security and Medicare don't add up”
What this flag on a pay stub means, why it matters, and what to check.
What it means
The year-to-date Social Security and Medicare totals imply different wages, or year-to-date Social Security is more than 6.2% of year-to-date gross pay.
Why it matters
Both taxes are withheld on the same wages every paycheck (until Social Security reaches its yearly wage cap), so their year-to-date totals stay in proportion. Edited totals often don't.
Ordinary explanations
- A mid-year payroll provider change that restarted some totals.
What to check
Ask the employer to confirm year-to-date gross pay and taxes. Use the phone number on the employer's official website, not the one printed on the stub.
A flag is a reason to verify with the source, not proof. Apply the same steps to every applicant.
